History of Ecstasy

From its creation, Ecstasy was and still is created in laboratories because producers mix several man-made ingredients which produce specific effects. This sole reason makes it different than other illegal drugs which come from natural resources. Cocaine comes from the coca leaf, marijuana is made from the hemp plant, and heroin is synthesized from the poppy plant.

First created in 1912, MDMA was patented worldwide by Germany by the Merck Company in 1914 (at that time it was not used on humans or for human research). However, in the 1950's, the United States government briefly researched Ecstasy for the CIA's chemical warfare investigations. During 1953/54, the government issued to research MDA and MDMA as truth serums, but this proved unsuccessful. Also in 1978 did two psychiatrists use large quantities of MDMA in their therapy sessions with patients. During the 1990's Ecstasy started to become popular at dance parties known as raves. At these venues, techno music is played extremely loudly along with flashing lights. Teens and young adults tend to attend these raves for days and weekends at times. Currently, not only is Ecstasy used at raves, they are now used widely at clubs. This factor gives it another popular name: the Club Drug.
